Frequently asked questions

A little clarity, before we begin.

It’s natural to have questions about therapy. Here’s a sense of what working together can look like.

Your sessions

Have another question?

You’re welcome to ask
What would our first session look like?

Our first session is 60–90 minutes. We’ll talk about the issues you are currently facing and relevant background, so I can get to know you.

It’s understandable to feel anxious or nervous. We’ll work together to create a space where you can speak freely about what is on your mind and in your heart, and feel seen, heard and understood.

What happens in subsequent sessions?

Subsequent sessions are usually weekly and last 50 minutes. We can discuss a different length or frequency during our first session.

The first few sessions give us space to see how we work together and to adjust. A good fit is crucial, and we can continue to talk about this throughout our work.

What does psychodynamic psychotherapy mean?

Psychodynamic psychotherapy, sometimes called psychodynamic counselling, is my main approach. We may explore your childhood experiences, relationships with caregivers and other significant people, attachment styles, and relational wounds.

As we talk about situations in your life, we can notice patterns in your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. These can help us understand beliefs and internal “rules” that operate outside your awareness.

Bringing these patterns into awareness can support a stronger sense of self-understanding and agency. You are the expert on your own life; our work makes room for you to decide what is meaningful and fulfilling for you.
